DRAFT GR. 4-9 LEARNING PROGRESSIONS FOR WRITING
The Draft Gr. 4-9 Learning Progressions for Writing are designed to support responsive, strengths-based instruction and assessment for learners in Grades 4 through 9. Grounded in the BC curriculum and aligned with current literacy research, the progressions highlight how key writing skills evolve over time. These progressions are not a checklist or a rubric. Instead, they offer a flexible tool to help educators:
-
identify where learners are in their writing development
-
plan targeted, inclusive instruction
-
support meaningful goal-setting with learners
By focusing on what learners can do and where they are headed next, the Learning Progressions for Writing help educators foster a writing culture that is student-centered and competency-driven.
This most recent draft of the Gr. 4-9 Learning Progressions for Writing (formerly known as the Writing Continuum), involves a shift from a trait-based model to a strand-based structure that offers a more flexible lens for understanding writing development. While the trait model supported focused feedback on individual elements of writing, the new strands are designed to be both distinct and interconnected, offering a view of how writing skills work together. You can learn more about the feedback collected from educators that led to this responsively developed draft assessment HERE.
This change responds to feedback from educators who found it challenging at times to separate traits like meaning and organization. The strand-based model emphasizes what writers do, such as how they plan, shape, revise, and clarify their ideas, making the progressions more actionable for instruction, conferencing, and assessment. This approach also aligns with BC’s curricular competencies, which focus on process, refinement, clarity, and purpose.
