EARLY LITERACY PROFILE (ELP)
ALPHABET KNOWLEDGE
In the Early Literacy Profile (ELP) assessment, alphabet knowledge plays a crucial role in understanding how young children connect the sounds of speech with the letters of the alphabetic code. This connection forms the bridge between phonological awareness and phonics, laying the foundation for early reading development.

Research shows that explicit teaching of the alphabetic principle significantly improves word recognition and reading comprehension. Since children enter school with varying levels of alphabet knowledge, it is essential for teachers to assess each child’s understanding and adjust their instruction accordingly.

Not all children require the same pace or approach to learning the alphabet. Some benefit from a slower, more deliberate focus on individual letters, while others may not need this level of instruction at all. By using small-group alphabet instruction, teachers can provide targeted support that meets each learner’s unique needs, helping all students progress along their literacy journey.
